Flushing Away the Future

I live in San Diego.  It's a desert, but it's far from deserted. It is home to over a million people, yet there's no source for drinking water in sight. How is this possible?  Like Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and the Imperial Valley, we get 80% of our water from the Colorado River.  That's over a thousand miles away!!!

What's more, Southern California is prone to drought, fires, and seasonal dry winds, yet we use water like it's in limitless supply.   We sprinkle green golf courses. We build fountains and swimming pools. We take long, hot showers and baths. And we do one very special thing that shows we clearly just don't effing care. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you... the courtesy flush.

The courtesy flush means flushing the toilet a second time to better clean the bowl after you've number twoed in it.
Yes, that's right. We would rather waste gallons of perfectly clean, fresh water than suffer the embarrassment of letting other people find out that we had just pooped (as if they wouldn't notice from the smell).
I know you might be thinking,

Hey, it's considered good manners to clean the bowl before the next guy, right?

I wonder if it will also be considered good manners to let that guy drink your share of the day's ration of water.  With so few water reserves remaining, we might even want to replace the well-loved but seldom followed mantra,
If it's brown, flush it down with something more appropriate, like Flush it twice, pay the price.
When Southern California eventually becomes both a desert and deserted, I do believe the courtesy flush will "go down" in history as the shittiest waste of water, ever.

Do you know of any other shitty ways that people waste water without thinking? I'd love to share your thoughts.
